JTI is the international division of Japan Tobacco, the third leading tobacco company in the world. The company is relatively young, but it traces its origins to the 19th century what demonstrates its outstanding experience in production of qualitative tobacco products and rich heritage which helped to gain the trust of millions of adult smokers across the world.

Key facts and dates

Japan Tobacco was established in 1898 as the state monopoly in the domestic tobacco industry. The company manufactured tobacco products to satisfy only the needs of Japanese smokers. The exclusive Japan brands are still unknown to international smokers.

In 1977 Mild Seven cigarette brand was launched in Japan. The brand become hugely popular shortly after the introduction, and is still holding its leadership positions in the local market. The success of Mild Seven gave the owners of Japan Tobacco the idea of becoming an international company.

In 1981 Mild Seven was introduced to international tobacco market.

In 1985 the state monopoly was terminated and Japan Tobacco became a public company. In the 1990s Japan Tobacco Inc acquires several tobacco companies in Russia and in Tanzania.

In 1999 JT acquired the international business of American tobacconist RJ Reynolds, establishing Japan Tobacco International. In the following years the newly-created company kept growing by buying tobacco companies and launching strategic brands.

In 2007 JTI purchased Gallaher Group, what was the largest acquisition in the Japanese history.

Currently, Japan Tobacco International owns an 11 % market share in the worldwide tobacco market and it has been the most rapidly growing tobacco company in the world, growing by 34% in eight years (2000-2008). And this is the major evidence of the astonishing success the JTI products have among adult tobacco-lovers.

Business and environment protection

The tobacco giant employs over 20,000 people throughout the world who are working in 30 manufacturing plants and 80 office centers.

Japan Tobacco International sells its products in more than 120 countries, owning three of the top five best-selling brands in the world – Mild Seven, Camel and Winston.

JTI is well-known for its efforts to reduce the greenhouse gases emissions. The company modified its plants to cut the emissions by 3%.
